The protests organized, in an infra-pandemic context, by the Black Lives Matter movement, following the assassination of George Floyd, have led to the acceleration of a process of removal of some elements of cultural heritage, considered a symbol of a past that is no longer representative of contemporary society. Abstract

The protests organized, in an infra-pandemic context, by the Black Lives Matter movement, following the assassination of George Floyd, have led to the acceleration of a process of removal of some elements of cultural heritage, considered a symbol of a past that is no longer representative of contemporary society. In the United States, statues of the Confederates have thus come under fire, while in Europe, those of exponents linked to nineteenth-twentieth-century imperialism. In Italy, the object of dispute was the statue of Indro Montanelli, who channeled the media debate for almost a month, in June 2020. Starting from an epistemological excursus in the context of contested heritage, the article presents a reflection, by reviewing, using the tools of content analysis, the corpus of newspaper headlines published online in the weeks of the dispute in question. The goal is to reconstruct the interpretations that have been provided, while putting forward some research proposals on possible future scenarios.
