Among of the seminal reflections about the enigma of voluntary servitude elaborated during the twentieth century there is undoubtedly the original psycho-sociological theorization which emerged in German-speaking culture as a combination of the Marxist materialistic critique of society and of the Freudian analysis of the subconscious. The essay sheds light on some important moments of this turning point in contemporary thought, describing the genetic context of the idea of “psychopolitics” as it was shaped by the authors belonging to the Frankfurt School.
