This essay is devoted to an interpretation of the concepts of major and minor, which are defined in relation to the linguistic and cultural history of Portugal. It reflects on the purely fictional, if not mythical, foundations of the – tempting – notion of ‘majority’ that every culture experiences in the course of its history. The essay suggests that we should proudly cultivate the minority that is in within each of us, which can be interpreted as the ability to observe phenomena from a marginal, non-canonical point of view, consonant with an attitude that Ennio Flaiano has provocatively called the ‘equality complex’.
