This paper fleshes out Hecataeus’ engagement with the topic of truth and lies, as it emerges from the proemium to the Genealogies (fr. 1 EGM). The first section analyses this text, by pointing out Hecataeus’ opinion on the subject. Then, the following paragraphs contextualize Hecataeus’ position. The second section highlights how the poets shared similar preoccupations regarding truth and slander in their opponents’ tales. The third section explores the same topic in the production of the so-called Presocratic philosophers.
