Temporary preventive anti-seismic safety features for historic churches: the church of San Verano in Peccioli (Pisa)

The present work assesses the effectiveness of anti-seismic, temporary and preventive safety features for St Verano’s church, a Romanesque church located in Peccioli, a village nearby Pisa (Italy). Such kind of safety features are alternative to the well-known consolidation techniques, too expensive and difficult to perform in many cases. The purpose of the work concerns the problem to protect the historical Italian heritage from destructive earthquakes, saving on the interventions, by means of provisional frames. Two configurations for steel wires are individuated, interpreting the results of numerical analyses with respect to the actual situation. Outcomes showed the positive effect of significantly reducing the intensity of the seismic action that affects the weak elements of the masonry structure.
