This article analyzes a corpus of stories produced by women writers within one of the most popular literary genres of the Thirties in Russia: the society tale (svetskaja povest'). The work explores the peculiarities of female appropriation of the myth of St Petersburg and its impact on the representation of crucial gender issues in the Russian society of the time.
