What is the purpose of social research today? Can it still fulfill a cognitive function related to sociodemographic transformations? How has it adapted to the spread of big data and how has it been able to take advantage of the opportunities derived from the Internet and advances in information technology? In addition to answering these questions, the volume offers the reader a review of the main research techniques (interview, attitude scales, observation, focus groups and others), up to the most current developments. Beginning with an examination of the epistemological principles and rules governing the process of empirical inquiry, the book considers--updating it--the debate between proponents of qualitative and quantitative approaches, highlighting the merits and limitations of both, and then illustrates orientations of growing use (such as social network analysis) or more recent ones (such as text mining). The text is designed as an agile guide for students in the first years of university courses or for those who want to approach the subject. To this end, technical-statistical notions are kept to a minimum, while several critical notations and reflections on the judicious use of methodological tools in the social sciences are offered.

Abstract
To this end, technical-statistical notions are kept to a minimum, while several critical notations and reflections on the judicious use of methodological tools in the social sciences are offered.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
