This study examines the dating and the commission of the Virgin and Child with Saint Basil, the high altarpiece of Santa Maria del Priorato painted by Andrea Sacchi. Not mentioned by Lione Pascoli in the biography of the painter, the canvas is brought up for the first time in Giovanni Antonio Bruzio’s Theatrum Romanae Urbis, an unpublished Roman guide. In the manuscript life of Sacchi, Giovan Pietro Bellori records that the work is commissioned by Cardinal Antonio Barberini, the principal protector of the artist. Until now the picture has been dated on a stylistic basis to 1632-1636. Through the analysis of the sources and the study of the relationship between Cardinal Barberini and the Order of Malta, this article aims to postpone the dating of the painting at the end of the thirties (1637-1639).
