Roma: modelli per i quartieri operai della periferia orientale

Nowadays the eastern suburbs of Rome stands as a chaotic scenario and as an example of urban fragmentation. Such heterogeneity of the urban fabrics, combined with different morphological structures, has however an inerent historical legacy with the ancient Roman road system (Collatina, Prenestina and Casilina). The infrastructural system also enables to understand the configuration of this part of the city during the industrial history of Rome, especially in the period between the late 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. To the first industries – located in the rural areas until 1870 (year of the so-called “capture of Rome”) – is due a profound change in the relationship between the productive and the residential fabrics of the city. The paper analyses the development phases of the quarter of San Lorenzo, so different from the building habits of the city.
