The historiographical gap concerning the Genoese gaze upon Venice (G. Assereto) is even more noticeable regarding the Stato da Mar. This was a much debated argument in the Genoese leading class, especially during the 17th century. When the Ottoman conquered Chios (1566), the Genoese system of settlements in the Black Sea eventually came to an end. The rearming project, which meant to re-establish commercial ties with the Levant, too, asked for a review of the political-diplomatic relationship with Venice and its Mediterranean dominions. In that sense, Genoa’s failure to assist Crete in the War of Candia (1645-69) is the symbol of a failure. On the contrary, the galaxy of contemporary social, economic and political relationships shows a completely different scenario: many Genoese families were born, lived and thrived in the Stato da Mar, and sometimes even administered and defended it (for instance the Giustiniani di Pantaleo, who escaped from Chios and settled down in Morea)

Abstract
On the contrary, the galaxy of contemporary social, economic and political relationships shows a completely different scenario: many Genoese families were born, lived and thrived in the Stato da Mar, and sometimes even administered and defended it (for instance the Giustiniani di Pantaleo, who escaped from Chios and settled down in Morea)File | Dimensione | Formato | |
