Condensationof DNAhelicesintohexagonallypacked bundlesand toroidsrepresentsan intriguingexampleof functionalorganizationof biologicalmacromoleculesat thenanoscale.The condensationmodelsare basedon the uniquepolyelectrolytefeaturesof DNA, howeverherewe couldreproduceaDNA-likecondensationwithsupramolecularhelicesof smallchiral molecules,therebydemonstratingthatit is amore generalphenomenon.We showthat the bile saltsodiumdeoxycholate can formsupramolecularhelicesuponinteractionwithoppositelychargedpolyelectrolytesof homo-polymeror blockcopolymers.Athigherorder,acontrolledhexagonalpackingof the helicesintoDNA-likebundlesandtoroidscouldbe accomplished.The resultsdiscloseunknownsimilaritiesbetweencovalent and supramolecularnon-covalenthelicalpolyelectrolytes,whichinspirevisionaryideasofconstructingsupramolecularversionsof biologicalmacro-molecules.Asdrug nanocarriersthe polymer–bilesalt super-structureswouldget advantageof acomplexchiralityatmolecularandsupramolecularlevels,whoseeffecton thenanocarrierassisteddrugefficiencyis astill unexploredfascinatingissue.
