The Independence statute of the European Central Bank (ECB) has been reinforced throughout the crisis. The enactment of extraoridary monetary policy programmes has nevertheless been challenged with individual actions. While the Court of justice seems ready to recognize the need for a wide discretion of moentary authorities to tackle with the challenges posed by the crisis, arguments raised at the nationa level - including that based on the defence of national constitutional identity - seem more ambiguous.
