Sustainability and safety are predominant goals of the construction sector for the 21st century. Recently, research efforts have been made to integrate seismic and energy efficiency solutions for existing buildings. Yet, these studies were typically limited to retrofit interventions at global building level. Whereas, combined seismic and energy performance could and should be part of the design process at both building and component level. This paper investigates the integrated performance of reinforced concrete buildings consisting of traditional vs. low-damage technologies for both structural system and facades. Seismic and energy risk analyses, accounting for uncertainties, are carried out to compare the alternative systems in terms of combined economic losses. Results demonstrate the reliability of this integrated approach to support investment decision making.

Abstract

Whereas, combined seismic and energy performance could and should be part of the design process at both building and component level. This paper investigates the integrated performance of reinforced concrete buildings consisting of traditional vs. low-damage technologies for both structural system and facades.
