Abstract

In recent decades, the literature has often dealt with the close interaction between man and the en-vironment in the region between the cities of Tarquinia and Civitavecchia, giving back a diachronic picture of a settlement reality that appears to be extremely articulate. The whole region presents itself as a district particularly favourable to the development of more or less structured human settlements, thanks to the pe-culiar environmental configuration that seems to have played a prominent role here in all historical epochs. In fact, a detailed survey of the territorial framework in question for the low age is still missing. In this con-text, therefore, an attempt was made to reconstruct the agricultural landscape for the area bordered by the course of the river Marta to the north and the course of the river Marangone to the south in the period be-tween X and XV century AD through the joint use of the working methods proper to the Topography Histor-ical and Archaeology of Landscapes. For the territorial context in question, in particular, a research method has been tested which has provided for the progressive integration, in the GIS environment, of archaeologi-cal data and historical cartography. Thanks to the punctual "vectorization" of all the agricultural divisions and the toponomastic data extracted from the cartographic sources it has been possible to reconstruct a pre-cise and functional territorial mesh to the correct repositioning also of the environmental information report-ed in the historical cartography not geodesic. The comparison of the mosaic thus obtained with archaeologi-cal data and documentary sources of administrative and legal brand related to the X-XV century AD, has produced some circumstantial maps on the destination of use of the ancient soils and has allowed to appre-ciate the forms of continuity and discontinuity recorded during the centuries on territorial arrangements.
