The academic spin offs (ASOs) can be an important source of economic development. However, there is a lack of studies regarding the impact of parent-child relationships on spin-offs growth and performance. Specifically, there are few studies examining the consequences and the impact of parent university engagement after the spin-off generation, and taking the perspective of founded firms. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether the presence of the spinning university can affect the company ability to create value after the spin-off. We analyze the engagement of parent university by examining the different roles of ownership structure and boards of directors and the changes in the governance structures after foundation. Since prior studies are mainly based on case studies and surveys, we test theoretical hypotheses by a sample of 194 Italian ASOs. The results support the hypothesis that the engagement of parent university affects the early stage performance of ASOs. These findings contribute to extend the parent-child approach to the study of ASOs performance. Moreover, we provide implications for ownership and board composition decisions after spin-off generation.
