The text is the review of the original volume edited by Élodie Dupey García and Guadalupe Pinzón Ríos, which contains one of the first collections of essays on the topic of smell, its meaning and social uses in the long history of Mexico, from the ancient pre-Hispanic civilizations, known mainly through archaeological data and testimonies of the first colonizers, passing through the colonial period, up to the historical documents relating to the period after Independence and the beginning of the twentieth century. The review seeks to highlight the productivity of a methodological approach attentive to the sensory sphere and the originality of the analysis proposed in the essays collected in the volume.
Il testo è la recensione dell’originale volume curato da Élodie Dupey García e Guadalupe Pinzón Ríos, che costituisce una delle prime raccolte di saggi concernenti il tema degli odori, dei loro significati e usi sociali nella lunga storia del Messico, dalle antiche civiltà preispaniche, note principalmente attraverso dati archeologici e testimonianze dei primi colonizzatori, passando per il periodo coloniale, fino ai documenti storici relativi al periodo successivo all’Indipendenza e agli inizi del XX secolo. Nella recensione si cerca di valorizzare la produttività di un approccio metodologico attento alla sfera sensoriale e l’originalità delle analisi proposte nei saggi raccolti nel volume.
