The “fixity of thought” in the ancient world: Greek-Hittite etymological comparisons · This paper pres- ents an interpretation of the primitive semantic value of two Indo-European roots, *mel- and *men-, whose historical outcomes oscillate, in terms of semantics, between the value of ‘to think, to have in mind’ and that of ‘to linger, to stay still, to remain’. In particular, it aims at putting forward that both these semantic values were originally conveyed by each root, and that, therefore, each one was originally polysemic. I propose the semantic evolution of these Indo-European roots into the documented historical forms (in particular in Greek and Hittite) in terms of the structural metaphor lingering is thinking.

Abstract
The “fixity of thought” in the ancient world: Greek-Hittite etymological comparisons · This paper pres- ents an interpretation of the primitive semantic value of two Indo-European roots, *mel- and *men-, whose historical outcomes oscillate, in terms of semantics, between the value of ‘to think, to have in mind’ and that of ‘to linger, to stay still, to remain’. In particular, it aims at putting forward that both these semantic values were originally conveyed by each root, and that, therefore, each one was originally polysemic. I propose the semantic evolution of these Indo-European roots into the documented historical forms (in particular in Greek and Hittite) in terms of the structural metaphor lingering is thinking.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
