The article focuses on the topic of lexical collocability as a phenomenon subject to diachronic variation. The collocational range of a word may imperceptibly vary and determine changes in the meaning of the word. The paper aims to shed light on this kind of small-scale diachronic shifts describing a case study. By using data extracted from the Russian National Corpus, the analysis shows the progressive restriction of the combinatorial potential of the Russian verb чинить over XVIII-XX centuries and its simultaneous semantic specialization. The findings suggest that the limited collocations formed by the verb in contemporary usage can be regarded as “relicts of the past”, i. e. чинить препятствия, суд, расправу, произвол, насилие, обиды.
