Abstract

First results are described of a research project that aims at realizing new types of anchorages and dowels with shape memory alloys. These are applied in the field of restoration of ad works such as mosaics. frescoes and statues. Two prototypes are described of which one is minimally invasive and the other one is reversible. In recent years the protection of the historical and artistic heritage has become increasingly urgent. Technological advance has created techniques which are both more versatile and less intrusive We propose that the use of shape memory alloys may furnish one more such technique. Those alloys may be used to make minimally invasive anchorages for the conservation and restoration of mosaics and frescoes: springs of shape memory wire may serve as reversible pegs and dowels for the restoration of statues The project has been promoted by the authors who have already obtained some results. In particular. some dowels have been tested in the laboratory and on suitable samples of a parietal mosaic exhibiting typical detachments with respect to the plaster coats. At the present time we are testing pegs with shape memory springs for the restoration of statues. Such pegs provide a practical meaning to the concept of reversibility.
