In Levinas, too, one can find a position that can be defined as ‘negative philosophy of history’. For Levinas, history is, like the body, first of all a burden that binds the self. But history is also the ground on which one’s own time meets the time of the other. Finally, history can be described as the trace of the other from time, of eternity, which allows an unprecedented reversal of time.
