The paper presents an alternative explanation of Pāṇini's sūtra 1.4.34, which prescribes the dative to be used with certain Sanskrit verbs of speaking. Among such verbs, the root "hnu" is problematic, since, according to the commentators, it means 'to hide'. I am trying to show that the reading as a verb of speaking, namely 'to make ammend', is preferable and also supported by the Vedic data.

Abstract
The paper presents an alternative explanation of Pāṇini's sūtra 1.4.34, which prescribes the dative to be used with certain Sanskrit verbs of speaking. Among such verbs, the root "hnu" is problematic, since, according to the commentators, it means 'to hide'. I am trying to show that the reading as a verb of speaking, namely 'to make ammend', is preferable and also supported by the Vedic data.File allegati a questo prodotto
