The paper analyzes the various uses of conditionality in the experience of the European Union - from that relating to the access of third countries to the macroeconomic version that followed the crisis of 2008 - to focus on the mechanism of conditionality contained in EU Regulation no. 2092/2020, originally intended to protect the rule of law and used instead to protect the financial interests of the Union.
