The Changing Identity of “Wastelands” in the UK

The essay deals with the theme of urban regeneration in the British context, the first country to have experimented with large-scale redevelopment projects since the late 1970s (wastelands as a macro-category including brownfields, greyfields and greenfields). These fifty years of urban histories will be retraced with some significant examples, in which some aspects of the first experiments are still present (the redemption obtained through processes of gentrification and capitalisation of assets, with the consequent loss of identity), but also new formulas and new practices that seem to function as models for the new millennium (sustainability as a complex and temporally widespread parameter).

Il saggio affronta il tema della rigenerazione urbana nel contesto britannico, il primo paese ad aver sperimentato dalla fine degli anni Settanta progetti di recupero di aree dismesse su larga scala (le wastelands come macro categoria che include i brownfields, greyfields e greenfields). Portando alcuni significativi esempi si ripercorrono questi cinquanta anni di storie urbane in cui sono da un lato ancora presenti alcuni aspetti dei primi esperimenti (il riscatto ottenuto attraverso processi di gentrificazione e capitalizzazione dei beni, con la conseguente perdita di identità) ma anche nuove formule e nuove pratiche che sembrano funzionare da modelli per il nuovo millennio (la sostenibilità come parametro complesso e temporalmente diffuso).
