Aristokratische Männlichkeit im Krieg am Beispiel Ernst Jüngers

Following the studies by R. W. Connell, Tim Carrigan and John Lee, who theorized the ‘hegemonic masculinity’ in 1985, the aim of the present investigation is the analysis of the multidimensional representations of male figures in Ernst Jünger’s work. Indeed, these portrayals find expression through his personal war experiences in his cultural-political and literary activities and allow new interpretative modes through recourse to the concept of ‘aristocratic masculinity’ focusing on typical literary jüngerian areas of conflict, notably technique/nature, aesthetics/ethics and literature/life. As a consequence, this further perspective will allow a deeper understanding of the idea and conceptualization of the “new” man within the German society during the interwar period, that is a new significant male image that characterizes both Jünger’s production and the Weimar Republic.
