The project is a Memorial of the Wars fought in the region of Karabakh (Qarabağ) in Azerbaijan. The Project, following the methodological lines contained in the Preliminary Program received, interprets the Azerbaijani cultural identity following the ancient tradition of carpets. This is the expression of a visual culture in which geometric and figurative motifs of extraordinary charm converge, universally admired also for their symbolic value. The team is composed by: Paolo Portoghesi, Roberto Greco, Leone Spita, Marco Sorrentino, Chiara Rutelli, Giorgio Ortolani, Marco Travaglini, Odine Manfroni, Alfredo Passeri. One of the themes that has characterized the poetics of Portoghesi over the years, "listening to places" becomes, in his relentless desire to mix with the group, "listening to others". In this choral experience, he immediately expresses the idea that the geometric layout of Baku Memorial Park is based on the great tradition of carpets, a typical product of the culture and imagination of the Azerbaijani people: "From the patterns of the carpets derive the three central motifs that they form the base of the three pavilions through flower beds and ponds. The pavilions are conceived as architectures to be crossed, each of which offers a particular symbolic theme which, beyond the conflict whose memory is celebrated, is projected towards a future of balance and peace. Taken together, the three successive episodes form an architectural promenade”. Baku is the city of the economic and cultural awakening of a nation that wants to stand before the world with pride and audacity. Like other capital cities of the former Soviet republics, it boasts a techno-petroleum modernity reported by its belonging to international business networks and underlines this belonging by adapting its image. For a decade, it has been a land of architectural experimentation, even the most daring, often successful; sometimes the expression of a decomposed remodelling, of a formalist drift and of a provincialism for which something is beautiful only because it is new and alien. Designing in those territories is a fascinating and difficult experience. The tools of architecture are not enough: studies that are aimed at the disciplines of philosophy, history, economics, as well as those of anthropology, sociology and geography become essential in order to be able to intervene and have a clearer of the great transformations taking place, of which architecture is often only a consequence. Economic and geopolitical choices influence and invade these territories. Baku Memorial Park 2021 is however a reflection on architecture, on the intrinsic possibilities of the discipline and on the indispensable relationship with history. It is also a legacy of Portoghesi who, approaching his ninety years lived with extreme intensity, has not at all tired of playing the game of architecture.
