This article addresses the issue of labour regulation in an Italian shopping centre. A substantial dualism between insiders (in larger stores) and outsiders (in small shops) emerged from a survey conducted among workers. The two “worlds” of work differ in terms of regulation mechanisms: the one is charac- terised by formal regulation, through company-level bargaining; the other by informal regulation, through individual negotiations between employers and employees. All workers, anyway, expressed dissatisfaction with Sunday work, though this has not led to a protest. The lack of collective action is a puzzling issue, also related to the role played by the unions.

Abstract
This article addresses the issue of labour regulation in an Italian shopping centre. A substantial dualism between insiders (in larger stores) and outsiders (in small shops) emerged from a survey conducted among workers. The two “worlds” of work differ in terms of regulation mechanisms: the one is charac- terised by formal regulation, through company-level bargaining; the other by informal regulation, through individual negotiations between employers and employees. All workers, anyway, expressed dissatisfaction with Sunday work, though this has not led to a protest. The lack of collective action is a puzzling issue, also related to the role played by the unions.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
