The essay analyzes Jacobi’s account of German Idealism in his latest important work, "On Divine Things", aiming at highlighting some changes in relation to previous texts, especially his "Letter to Fichte". The contrast between theism and naturalism frames Schelling’s philosophy as the outcome of German Idealism. The essay deals in a first part with Jacobian interpretation of Fichte’s and Schelling’s philosophies, in a second part with a different reading of Kant’s place in the history of recent philosophy. The third part of the essay highlights how Fries’ contemporary production may have formed a basis for Jacobi both for a different reconstruction of the relationship between Criticism and Idealism, and for a more philosophically argued conception of faith. The outcome of the discussion, argued in the concluding part, is that the qualification of ‟theism” for his position is possible to Jacobi for the awareness that he could develop a theism of a different nature than that of the philosophical tradition, on the basis of his basic Platonism, also found in Kant and supported by Fries’ theories. Such theism could be also a response to irrational interpretations of his philosophy
