This essay offers an introduction to the reading of Melchiorre Cesarotti's "Essay on the Philosophy of Languages" in the light of recent studies. Thanks to Cesarotti, a strand of linguistic studies of a properly philosophical nature is also emerging in Italy. The author's sources are investigated, with particular regard to Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and Charles de Brosses. His thought is seen in relation to the traditional "question of language", investigating the aspects in which it differs profoundly from this tradition.
