The article analyzes the evolution of the representative function within the European Union from the foundation of the ECSC in 1951 to the European elections of 2019. It examines the criteria adopted for the distribution of seats within the European Parliament, the definition of the mandate of the parliamentarians and the transition from nomination by national parliaments to direct election.
