The architects who designed the urban expansion north of Naples have most of the merit to have spurred me to study architecture. I remember that, when I was a child, every car travel was an opportunity to press my nose against the window to observe these cement monads drawing my city, as different faces of the same place each time, a compulsive accumulator of shapes and experimentations. In the meanderings of this refined urban design, the sails of Scampia were the most exciting bulwark. I obsessively gazed at them as long as the motion of the car allowed me and it was extraordinary to be able to observe all with the eyes free of prejudices I had at that age. I realised it by growing up, when, progressively, the awareness of the cumbersome social weight of those places started to emerge within me. A weight that struck with unjustified violence the face of Scampia: the Sails.

Gli architetti che hanno disegnato l’espansione urbana a nord di Napoli hanno buona parte del merito di avermi spinto a studiare architettura. Ricordo che da bambino ogni spostamento in auto era l’occasione per stare con il naso attaccato al finestrino a osservare queste monadi di cemento che disegnavano la mia città come facce ogni volta diverse di uno stesso luogo, accumulatore compulsivo di forme e sperimentazioni. Nei meandri di questo raffinato disegno urbano le vele di Scampia erano il baluardo più entusiasmante. Le fissavo ossessivamente per tutto il tempo in cui il moto dell’auto ne consentiva lo sguardo ed era straordinario riuscire a scrutare tutto con gli occhi privi di pregiudizi che avevo da bambino. Me ne sono reso conto crescendo, quando, progressivamente, si è fatta largo in me la consapevolezza del peso sociale ingombrante di quei luoghi. Un peso che si è abbattuto con inspiegabile violenza sul volto di Scampia: le Vele.
