The paper proposes an overall interpretation of the Medea and Jason episode in Roman de Troie by Benoît de Sainte- Maure. Starting from a comparison with Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Heroides, the most relevant innovations of this version of the classical legend, chiefly characterised by the suppression of all the crimes traditionally associated with the Medea figure, are high-lighted. The numerous omissions carried out by the French author testify not only his will to reinterpret the myth in a Christian way, but also to focus on the heroine’s phenomenology of love, in accordance with the cultural climate of the 12th century. Hence, the episode offers additional evidence concerning the process of free appropriation of the classics, which particularly distinguishes the production of the French romans antiques.
