This essay is an introduction to three archival documents relating to as many naval operations of the Italian Royal Navy at the beginning of the Second World War. In details, the present study aims to historically and critically frame three missions accomplished by Italian submarines Mocenigo, Micca and Argo in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean during the last five months of 1940. For this purpose, the study firstly provides an overall picture of the Italian submarine operations in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic war theatres throughout 1940. Then, it focuses on the three said missions, attempting to analyse them in the light of the information provided by the previous historical overview. At the bottom of the text, an appendix reproduces the documents describing the missions, part of the series Notizie su operazioni navali of the Supermarina fond.
