The present paper aims to investigate the role that the dream has had in the German Romanticism and in the French Surrealism in a comparative way: the proposed analysis focuses on the mutual relation between German Romanticism and French Surrealism, on the common and different aspects of these two literary and cultural movements. Following Löwy’s idea of affinité élective the paper shows how the concept of dream depicted and developed in the literary works of German romantic writers (Clemens Brentano, Ludwig Tieck, Novalis) influenced the theories of the French surrealist writers, their understanding of dream and poetic production. As the theme is multifaceted and it is impossible to give a unique interpretation, the analysis focuses on particular works considered representative.

Abstract
The present paper aims to investigate the role that the dream has had in the German Romanticism and in the French Surrealism in a comparative way: the proposed analysis focuses on the mutual relation between German Romanticism and French Surrealism, on the common and different aspects of these two literary and cultural movements. Following Löwy’s idea of affinité élective the paper shows how the concept of dream depicted and developed in the literary works of German romantic writers (Clemens Brentano, Ludwig Tieck, Novalis) influenced the theories of the French surrealist writers, their understanding of dream and poetic production. As the theme is multifaceted and it is impossible to give a unique interpretation, the analysis focuses on particular works considered representative.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
