The article discusse the theory of metaphor that Aristotle of Stageira elaborated in his books on "Poetics" and "Rhetoric". By focusing on the 'brevity' that characterizes metaphors with respect to similes, it is argued that Aristotle attribited to the former non only greater formal elegancr, but also and above all a specific ocgnitive function. The latter would consist of a process of 'identification' (not merely assimilation) of heterogeneous things that causes an increase in knowledge both in those who produce nd in those who listen to the matphor. Aristotle's theory was further developed in the Baroque Age thanks to Matteo Pellegrini's conception of ingenuity. The article concludes by illustrating how these aspects of Aristotle's thought may be related to currenti issues in the field of cognitive linguistics.

Abstract
The article concludes by illustrating how these aspects of Aristotle's thought may be related to currenti issues in the field of cognitive linguistics.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
