In the early sixteenth century in Rome the design of some remarkable bathrooms was documented by the restricted circle of architects working for Leo X and Clement VII. A drawing in the Library of Siena, already attributed for its graphic ductus and stylistic motifs to Giulio Romano, shows a “stufa” (stove) in the form of a cryptoporticus carved in the hollow of the excavation ground overlooking an external garden that may suggest a substructure of an upper terrace. Some elements such as the dating of the drawing to the Roman period of the architect, already proposed by Stefano Ray, its origin from a Tuscan archive, the typology of the stove, and the topographical congruence with steep sites, pushed me to formulate two hypotheses: the first recognizes (in it) a variant of the project for the nymphaeum of Genazzano conventionally attributed to Bramante; the second places the drawing in the design process of Villa Turini on the Janiculum.

Abstract
In the early sixteenth century in Rome the design of some remarkable bathrooms was documented by the restricted circle of architects working for Leo X and Clement VII. A drawing in the Library of Siena, already attributed for its graphic ductus and stylistic motifs to Giulio Romano, shows a “stufa” (stove) in the form of a cryptoporticus carved in the hollow of the excavation ground overlooking an external garden that may suggest a substructure of an upper terrace. Some elements such as the dating of the drawing to the Roman period of the architect, already proposed by Stefano Ray, its origin from a Tuscan archive, the typology of the stove, and the topographical congruence with steep sites, pushed me to formulate two hypotheses: the first recognizes (in it) a variant of the project for the nymphaeum of Genazzano conventionally attributed to Bramante; the second places the drawing in the design process of Villa Turini on the Janiculum.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
