The present article aims to demonstrate that the word-final sequence * u̯r̥ of Proto-Indo-European was reflected as a metathesised *-ru in Tocharian. The reconstruction of this sound law can shed new light on a number of morphophonological problems of Tocharian, including the origin of r-stem nouns with the plural ending TB -wa, A -u, the unexpected o vocalism in isolated forms of both Tocharian A and B, and possibly the source of the plural marker -(a)una in Tocharian B.

Abstract
The present article aims to demonstrate that the word-final sequence * u̯r̥ of Proto-Indo-European was reflected as a metathesised *-ru in Tocharian. The reconstruction of this sound law can shed new light on a number of morphophonological problems of Tocharian, including the origin of r-stem nouns with the plural ending TB -wa, A -u, the unexpected o vocalism in isolated forms of both Tocharian A and B, and possibly the source of the plural marker -(a)una in Tocharian B.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
