Bracciano’s Orsini Odescalchi castle is an important example of Renaissance stronghold and so it is become is the subject of an agreement among Rome’s Sapienza University, Bracciano’s Administration and its owner, Princess Odescalchi. In particular, the goal of this research is the study of the Castle from an architectural and historical point of view. A historical analysis, based on huge amount of data from Rome’s archives has emphasized some interesting unknown news. In 1803 the dukedom of Bracciano was sold to Marquis Giovanni Torlonia in accordance with a jus redimendi agreement. Sometime later, therefore, it was purchased by Odescalchis again. We are going to analysis the evaluation report of the Castle, since it exhaustively describes the fortress as it was on 31 March 1803. This is a very relevant document gives us not only significant historical data, but also several informations about the building techniques mainly used throughout the Roman area.
Il castello Orsini-Odescalchi di Bracciano, situato a circa 40 km da Roma, rappresenta un interessante esempio di palazzo-fortezza, di particolare qualità architettonica ed artistica. Fondato su un nucleo medievale ed ampliato nella seconda metà del XV secolo esso, nonostante i numerosi interventi che vi sono stati realizzati nel corso dei secoli, conserva i caratteri della sua fase rinascimentale e parte delle finiture dello stesso periodo. Il manufatto, visitabile virtualmente utilizzando l’applicazione Google Arts & Culture, è attualmente oggetto di studio da parte dell’Università Sapienza insieme al Comune di Bracciano.
