P. Accoleius Lariscolus (RRC 486/1)

The main goal of this article is to reconstruct the history of a “not otherwise known” Roman (M. Crawford), the triumvir monetalis P. Accoleius Lariscolus (43 a.C.). He was the member of a gens, whose existence is only proven by a few coins (RRC 486/1) and inscriptions. The lack of historical evidence about this man necessarily leads to a deep analysis of material sources: the denarius and its picture on one hand, considered suggestive of the magistrate’s life. On the other hand, taking epigraphic and numismatic evidence into account is very important as well, in order to know the origo of the gens and the datation of the coinage issue. Through the analysis of coin hoards known, the context of issue is coming out, and confirms the hypothesis of Cavedoni: the third Civil War. The hypothesis of P. Accoleius’ direct involvement in this conflict would be finally proven by a non-Italian testimony, made by one of his family, whom he probably joined in Philippae following the triumvirate's armies.

Il presente articolo intende offrire una ipotesi ricostruttiva della storia di un personaggio “not otherwise known” (cit. Crawford), il magistrato monetale P. Accoleius Lariscolus (43 a.C.). Costui appartiene ad una gens che è nota soltanto da monete (RRC 486/1) e da alcuni rinvenimenti epigrafici. L’assenza di prove storiografiche sul conto di questo personaggio costringe a un’attenta disamina delle fonti materiali: da un lato il denario e la sua effigie, per molti allusiva dell’operato del monetale; dall’altro documenti epigrafici e ripostigli monetali, determinanti nella ricerca dell’origo della famiglia e data di coniazione della moneta. Attraverso l’analisi dei tesoretti si delinea un contesto di emissione conforme alla datazione proposta da Cavedoni: la terza Guerra Civile. Il coinvolgimento di P. Accoleio nel conflitto sarebbe infine avvalorato da una dedica extraitalica posta da un suo familiare giunto probabilmente a Filippi al seguito degli eserciti del triumvirato.
