Not quite the same romance: New transpositions of Genji monogatari into contemporary Japanese from the “Genji boom” era (2008) onwards Luca Milasi This article deals in detail with the most recent modern Japanese written renditions of The Tale of Genji. The discussion focuses on the uniqueness of the fine interplay between literary, linguistic and semiotic aspects that characterized such translated textual corpus after the 380 Abstract “Genji boom” of the last decade. In order to do that, this paper thoroughly investigates the versions that have been published in the last few years, marking the first millennium after the alleged completion of the original work. The symbolic value that the authors of several modern adaptations consciously or unconsciously assign to the act of authoring a modern rendition of the entire source text is analyzed in terms of how such act can embody the desire of the younger generations to approach the masterpiece in spite of the sentiments of awe it evokes. This paper therefore explicitly tackles the significance of modern renditions such as “Humbly translated Genji Monogatari” (Kin’yaku Genji monogatari, Shodensha, 2010- 2013) by Nozomu Hayashi and Genji Monogatari (Kawade shobō, 2017-2019) by Kakuta Mitsuyo as prime examples of how the source text was edited up to modern standards. It also uses a wide variety of sources, including many examples of paratextual references, to exemplify how the relevant authors relied on their narrative expertise in an attempt to consciously restructure the original text according to a new rhetorical model, with the aim of conjuring in a modern audience an aesthetic appreciation of what they perceived as relevant key themes of the work.
