Although Erasmus’s name was often invoked by his contemporaries in defense of alleged witches, his connection with demonology has been largely overlooked by scholarship. Some references to the subject can be found in his works and especially in his vast correspondence. The following analysis aims at highlighting Erasmus’s thoughts with regard to the phenomenon of witch-hunting, which he sees as yet another example of dangerous abuses fuelled by credulity and superstition.
