Brick historical curtain wall in Ancona, context and safeguard The study proposed starts from a work developed with ISCR (Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro – Ministero dei BeniCulturali e Ambientali) and ISPRA (Istituto Superiore per la ricerca e l’Ambiente) within an European project. The research focused on the evaluation of climate changing impact on the monuments of Ancona and the definition of a practical strategy for decay reduction. The present paper aims to propose a study method of the decay of brick historical architecture in Ancona. Merging vulnerability analysis of buildings with critical evaluation of material, architectural and environmental conditions it is possible to define an instrument able to support conservation. Vulnerability indexes were worked out through Risk Charter (Information and communication technology instrument from ISCR) and merged with the results worked out by ISPRA survey on atmospheric pollution. This investigation was then combined with the assessment of exogenous and endogenous factors acting on decay. As a result recurrently dangerous conditions were pointed out. The study of these conditions, depending both from environmental context and architectural features, makes it possible to give the direction to multiple conservation actions. These actions should aim to corroborate the intervention effect, preventing too invasive actions and endeavouring effectiveness in the aftermath.
