We review the results obtained during the two science runs O1 and O2 with the advanced gravitational wave detectors LIGO and Virgo. In particular, we review shortly the observations of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star coalescence followed by a set of astronomical measurements as the first example of investigating the universe by “multi-messenger” astronomy. Then, we focus our attention on the middle and long-term evolution of the gravitational wave detectors on the Earth with emphasis to their perspectives for the advancement on fundamental physics and astronomy.

Abstract
We review the results obtained during the two science runs O1 and O2 with the advanced gravitational wave detectors LIGO and Virgo. In particular, we review shortly the observations of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star coalescence followed by a set of astronomical measurements as the first example of investigating the universe by “multi-messenger” astronomy. Then, we focus our attention on the middle and long-term evolution of the gravitational wave detectors on the Earth with emphasis to their perspectives for the advancement on fundamental physics and astronomy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
