The aim of this paper is to analyze the role of the democratically and Christian inspired trade union in the modernization of the Italian trade union system. The first central issue is the strongly politicized notion of the trade union in the Italian tradition and in Italy after World War II. Consequently, the article deals with the basic features of the CISL as the Western choice, the productivism, the faith in the process of development of modern capitalism, anticommunism, and the combination of pragmatic attitude and ideological perspective.
