She is made of plastic, tall and thin, with flowing hair; she smiles to his interlocutor and perfectly dressed; she proposes heterosexual norms, codes of femininity, consumer values that women must reach to succeed in life and yearn for beauty. She is, perhaps, the longest toy in American history that has involved generations of girls all over the world. An object that goes beyond its category and becomes a pop icon, forerunner of the post-human, symbol of conflicts in relation to models of beauty, to which collectors, artists, women, feminists and post feminists, philosophers, assign, time to time, changing meanings. Starting from the exhibition “Barbie the Icon” created by Mattel and from events that connect Barbie with American history, I intend to propose a reflection on the representations of post-modernity, of beauty, characterized by the collapse between real and image, artificiality and naturalness, subject and object, and in which artification plays a key role in the symbolic construction of the messages to be transmitted.
È fatta di plastica, alta e magra, dai capelli fluenti, sorride al suo interlocutore, perfettamente abbigliata, e propone norme eterosessuali, codici della femminilità, valori consumistici a cui le donne devono tendere per avere successo nella vita e anelare alla bellezza. È forse il giocattolo più longevo della storia americana che ha coinvolto generazioni di bambine di tutto il mondo. Un oggetto che sconfina dalla sua categoria e diventa icona pop, precursore del postumano, simbolo di conflitti in relazione ai modelli di bellezza, a cui collezionisti, artisti, donne, femministe e postfemministe, filosofi, attribuiscono, di volta in volta, significati e narrative mutevoli. A partire dalla mostra “Barbie the Icon” realizzata dalla Mattel, e dagli eventi che accomunano Barbie con la storia americana, intendo proporre una riflessione sulle rappresentazioni della post-modernità, della bellezza, caratterizzate dal collasso tra reale e immagine, artificialità e naturalità, soggetto e oggetto, ed in cui l’artificazione gioca un ruolo chiave nella costruzione simbolica dei messaggi da trasmettere.
