Since about a quarter of the Anabasis6is occupied by speeches in which Xenophon makes his characters utter, it is essential to investigate their function. Ve subject of this paper are the speeches pronounced by Xenophon as a character, which as a whole can be interpreted as a sort of τέχνη ῥητορική, in the sense of a collection of exemplary speeches, appropriate to different situations. Trough these speeches the ethos of Xenophon is outlined, which coincides with that of the commander with all the qualities.
