Granular cell tumor of the breast: Tip and tricks on conventional and magnetic resonance imaging

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare, usually benign tumor of neural origin that was firstly described by Abrikossoff in 1926. Granular cell tumor can occasionally involve the breast, presenting as a hard, painless nodule, often mimicking invasive breast carcinoma at conventional imaging and characterized by variable features on magnetic resonance images. For these reasons radiologic diagnosis can be challenging and histopathological analysis is mandatory to reach a definite diagnosis. We report the case of a 67-year old woman with a histologically proven granular cell tumor in the right axillary tail. Conventional and magnetic resonance imaging characteristics as well as elements of radiological-pahological correlation are described.
