By introducing his notion of “Islamic languages”, Alessandro Bausani (1921-88) argued that in the late modern era, the dynamics hitherto connecting the languages of Muslims experienced a U-turn as a result of the impact of nationalisms and of the growing influence of colonial languages. However, more recently, an increasing number of Muslim actors have appropriated, in turn, former colonial languages for Islamic religious writings and discourses. The present article explores the francophone side of this trend, putting it in its sociological and ideological context, including theoretical discussions among insiders about the proper Islamic uses of French, and comparing them to analogous theorizations elaborated earlier by Anglophone Muslim writers. Subsequently, a provisional survey of lexical, syntactic and orthographic peculiarities of the French of Islamic publications is proposed, by contrasting them to solutions currently adopted by other francophone writers, especially by secular scholars of Islam, when dealing with similar issues. At this stage of our research, the gap between these linguistic varieties does not seem considerable, and looks even smaller among writers with high proficiency of scholarly French, in spite of the recommendations of Muslim theorists of “the Islamization of linguistics”. Likewise, a comparison with the dynamics of “language Islamization” identified by Bausani helps measure to what extent recent Islamic uses of French depart from changes affecting other languages in precolonial times, in spite of deceptive similarities.

En élaborant sa notion de « langues islamiques », Alessandro Bausani (1921-88) soulignait qu’à l’époque contemporaine, à cause de l’impact des nationalismes et de l’influence grandissante des langues des colonisateurs, les processus d’islamisation linguistique ont subi un revirement. Plus récemment, toutefois, on assiste à un phénomène d’appropriation des anciennes langues coloniales par des écrits et discours à caractère religieux islamique. Cet article se penche sur le côté francophone de cette tendance, en le situant dans son contexte sociologique et idéologique. La réflexion théorique qui l’accompagne de la part de ses acteurs est aussi prise en compte, en la comparant à celle qui l’a précédée du côté anglophone. On propose ensuite un inventaire provisoire des particularités lexicales, syntaxiques et orthographiques de ces publications islamiques par rapport aux solutions adoptées, pour traiter des mêmes sujets, par d’autres scripteurs francophones, notamment par les arabisants et islamologues laïcs. À ce stade de la recherche, les écarts ne nous semblent pas considérables, d’autant plus qu’ils tendent à s’estomper chez les scripteurs qui maîtrisent mieux le registre savant de la langue, en dépit des préconisations des idéologues musulmans prônant une « islamisation du langage ». De même, la comparaison avec les dynamiques d’islamisation linguistique identifiées par Bausani permet de mesurer le manque de continuité – malgré les apparences – des usages islamiques du français par rapport aux changements qui ont investi d’autres langues à l’époque précoloniale.
