Abstract

The city oldest core is usually considered as the urban part where environmental, architectural and historical evidence values are recognized: they are identifiable in the urban fabric continuity. Even the energetic character of each historic building flows from the choral behavior which every unit has, both in itself and in relation to other constructed organisms, to satisfy distribution-planning rules and art of building principles, dictated by local building methods experienced over time. This study highlights the importance of the indivisible relationship between the parts and the whole in the historic cities old center: it is the principal analysis factor to investigate for the evaluation of historic-monumental architecture energetic behavior and its environmental sustainability gradient after restoration. The paper shows the results of a survey made for Ceglie Messapica historic center (Brindisi). It was carried out with an interdisciplinary methodology, in order to activate a research project aimed to provide good practice guidance for the critical-conservative restoration of old buildings surfaces covered with thin “latte di calce” (milk of lime) layers.
