The essay addresses the problem of the relationship between classicism and symbolism in George’s poetry, captured in their historical protocols. Applied to the body, the interaction of the two models reveals the relationships of the lyrical self with time. In the present time, the body tends to lose its classical identity, which takes refuge back in time, revealing the difficulty of actively orienting itself towards the future. The comparison between George and Mallarmé allows to consolidate this perspective.

Abstract

The essay addresses the problem of the relationship between classicism and symbolism in George’s poetry, captured in their historical protocols. Applied to the body, the interaction of the two models reveals the relationships of the lyrical self with time. In the present time, the body tends to lose its classical identity, which takes refuge back in time, revealing the difficulty of actively orienting itself towards the future. The comparison between George and Mallarmé allows to consolidate this perspective.
