The essay focuses on the period of foundation of the romance en prose in the XIIIth c., and in particular on its most distinctive feature of aiming at constituting a summary embracing the various aspects of contemporary literary traditions. As a consequence, medieval prose romance would also entail a strong didascalic nature and a desire to present itself as conveyor of the values cherished and shared by contemporary society. Both these aspects are also discussed.

Abstract
